Decontamination trailers ensure worker safety
Problem
A construction company bid on a courthouse remodeling project in Terre Haute, Ind., when it noticed asbestos ceiling tiles throughout.
Solution
The project manager called Ameri-Can Engineering and selected the 820 decontamination trailer. The trailer, specially designed for particulate matter decontamination, features a tri-filter system for waste.

A rental option was discussed but due to the 8- to 10-year length of the project the contractor decided it would be more economical to purchase several trailers. The company is operating within compliance and the safety of its workers ensured. 574/892-5151; www.ameri-can.com.

Treatment system serves 50-person Canadian mining camp
Problem
Castle Resources, a mining company based in Canada, needed temporary wastewater treatment for a 50-person mining camp in remote northern British Columbia. It had to be easily transportable and withstand the extreme conditions of this harsh climate, while maintaining effluent discharge targets of 30/30 mg/l BOD5 and TSS.
Solution
Castle Resources retained engineer Eerik Lilles of Wildernest Systems Inc. “To be honest, from an engineering perspective there were very few options for this site,” he said. “The camp is built on tailings from the mine, so it’s obviously unsuitable for any kind of outhouse setup.” Lilles contacted Tristian Bounds, P.E., at Orenco Systems, and the two designed an AdvanTex AX-Mobile unit specific to project constraints.

The 21-foot, packed bed filter module can treat flows up to 2,500 gpd (9.46 m3/d). It includes a 3,000-gallon (11.36 m3) primary tank, a 2,000-gallon (7.57 m3) recirculation chamber, and a 1,000-gallon (3.79 m3) filtrate chamber, followed by UV disinfection. After disinfection, treated effluent is discharged to overland flow. Time from site investigation to startup was approximately five weeks. 800/348-9843; www.orenco.com.

Solar-powered gas monitor protects offshore rig
Problem
An offshore drilling rig needed to urgently monitor potentially dangerous gas levels in areas where conventional wired gas monitors were difficult or costly to install.
Solution
The rig operator purchased an MPS IV mobile gas monitoring platform from Oldham. The solar-powered unit has an onboard strobe and siren that can be configured with wireless communication. It can monitor up to four gas readings simultaneously and transmit those readings back to a primary alarm station. The monitoring platform is configurable with a tripod mount, wall mounted, pole mounted or mounted using available magnetic brackets.
Result
The rig’s environment is safely monitored for potentially dangerous gases. 800/338-3287; www.oldhamgas.com.
Comfortable quarters improve productivity
Problem
A natural gas production company performing fracking operations in the Marcellus Shale areas of northeastern Pennsylvania required rapid setup, take-down and relocation of temporary housing as it moved its crew to four different rig sites over a three-month period.
Solution
Lone Tree Remote Camps LLC provided four industrial grade, self-contained mobile housing units equipped with water, septic and electrical power, as well as phone, Internet and cable television. Units also featured temperature-controlled heating, air conditioning, porcelain sinks and toilets. Lone Tree provided transportation, setup and take-down at each site.
Result
The well-rested crew proved more productive and was able to complete work with minimal downtime. 801/491-8151; www.lonetreeusa.com
