Data logger enables mine to remotely monitor water quality
Problem
An open-cut coal mine needed to manage high-salinity water runoff into retaining dams. Water from the dams could only be released into the local river system when it was of sufficient quality and would not affect surrounding farm irrigation, making it necessary to monitor key parameters, including pH. Management searched for a data logging solution with the versatility to connect to a range of sensors and capable of remote access. The recorder also had to interface with a solar panel.
Solution
The mine mounted a dataTaker DT80 Intelligent Universal Input data logger from CAS Dataloggers in a weatherproof enclosure and connected it to sensors measuring water quality, conductivity (salinity), turbidity, pH and water levels for measuring and logging the water quality, as well as thermocouples for water and air temperature. A solar panel and conditioner powered the dataTaker and charged the backup battery, which was monitored by the DT80.

Personnel were able to keep a constant watch on data using the system’s remote access and connect at any time to observe changes in water quality during operations, such as mixing water from different sources. It also enabled personnel to remotely adjust calibration parameters in the data logger in the event of a required sensor replacement or program modification. 800/956-4437; www.dataloggerinc.com.

Trailer jetter cleans copper mine’s screens, hardened debris
Problem
One of Africa’s largest copper mines needed a blasting unit to clean screens and pipes that clogged with a mixture of mine debris and asbestos, creating a hard scale.
Solution
The mine selected a 10,000 psi, 18 gpm, 1,200-gallon trailer jetter from US Jetting LLC, which was dispatched and assembled on site.

Result
A dump gun and Monro orbital nozzle efficiently cleaned the screens. Using a USJ controlled-rotation nozzle and fixed drain jets, the hardened debris was removed. 800/538-8464; www.usjetting.com.
